Tonight after the President spoke of bipartisanship and truth telling the GOP once again spread more of the same old song and dance. Louisiana Congressman Charles Boustany was chosen as the mouth piece, but neglected to mention that over the course of his service (roughly four and a half years) he’s taken over $537,000 from PACs like insurance companies and other major corporations working to prevent health care reform.
Boustany was also one of the many GOP votes on the budget bill that would have gutted Medicare, leaving our seniors swamped with bills they can’t afford.
And speaking of Grandma’s out there everywhere – Boustany co-sponsored the portion of the HCR bill that would have paid for “end of life counseling” but you might have heard it called something else by Sarah Palin… oh that’s right… Death Panels.
And so called “tort reform??” Of course Boustany wants it … he’s been sued three different times for malpractice. Maybe if he spent a little less time talking about the President’s birth certificate and a little more time paying attention in surgery he’d have done his job he wouldn’t have killed anyone. Just a thought.
At the end of the speech, I had to wonder… is this the best the GOP has got?! Almost as big an embarrassment to the state of Louisiana as Bobby Jindal who gave the lame ass attempt at a response last time? Really?
The facts are that the GOP doesn’t care about bipartisanship – like always they just want to vote no. The leadership is against HCR even without a public option. Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe said he didn’t even have to read it to know he was voting against it. And Sen. Chuck Grassley said even if they get a bill he believes in 100% he still won’t vote for it. Its just more of the party of “no.”
One of the biggest jokes was when Boustany tried to pretend that the health insurance reform the President was talking about would send our country spiraling into debt. Even former Governor Sebelius has told us over and over this just isn’t the case. This past March during the State of the Union she said on CNN
“We have to get health-care reform done this year…What we have said is health reform has to happen this year, and it has to be deficit neutral. So we will work with the Congress to make sure that those two things happen.”
Ultimately, this will cut waste in Medicare, it will help those with pre-existing conditions – despite the fact that the GOP doesn’t want it to, and it will help aid small businesses saving them hundreds of billions of dollars and just under 200,000 jobs in the long run (pdf of report).
The facts are clear if we do nothing, our country collapses under the weight of our own inability to manage the system. If we make changes now we’ll stop the bleeding and we’ll live to fight for days to come. Its disappointing all the republicans seem to want to do is yell and name call when there is actual work to be done and progress to be made.
