Rep. Bill Otto is “A Colored Person Also”

Earlier this year Caleb posted about Kansas Representative Bill Otto (R – 9th District) and his ‘Redneck Rap’.  Well today in my boredom, I decided to check out Rep Otto’s YouTube page just in case he produced another hit single.  A video entitled ‘Redneck Rap 3′ (see below) was on there.  This one may not become another one of Rep. Otto’s billboard chart toppers, but it has some fairly concerning statements. I know the video is painful to watch but just stick with it.

Here is a run down of somethings that happen in the video.

  • Around the start of the video Rep. Otto is holding a picture of himself picture and randomly states that some people think he looks like abolitionist John Brown, he doesn’t go much further with this statement but it leaves me wondering what exactly he means by it.
  • Rep. Otto goes on to attack Kansas Senate minority leader Anthony Hensley.
  • Then he takes on the NAACP. “I had one comment that said, ‘What in the world is the NAACP?’ and I said ‘it’s the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’ The person laughed and kind of…”  After that statement the video is roughly cut and goes on to him talking about some jackets that he owns, I just can’t help but wonder what came after the words ‘and kind of’ – is this another instance of Rep. Otto being wildly inappropriate? Maybe.
  • Then Rep. Otto goes on to talk about the videos of Black History, including those of Gordon Parks and the Learning Tree, that he is very familiar with.
  • Shortly after this the video cuts to a clip of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rep. Otto tries to use this clip to justify his statements.
  • After the very oddly placed video of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. we immediately come back to Rep. Otto’s hand in the camera followed with the words ”I have a spot leftover that I didn’t quite get clean, that spot is white, you know, my shirt is white, I don’t know the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, well you know I have known in my life one gentleman who was an albino and even he had red eyes, so I guess we are all a little bit colored.” What?!?!?
  • But wait! It’s not over. He goes on to say, “I can not apologize for who I am, for I am a colored person also.

This video is one of those smacking your palm to your forehead moments.  I don’t know exactly what Rep. Otto hoped to accomplish with this video nor do I know what exactly all of his statements mean, but at the very least I find it all concerning.  Is Rep. Otto trying to justify is outward racism to our President? You be the judge, I’m just passing it along.
