Republican Platform – More Cuts to K-12 Funding

Did anyone else notice the front page of today’s Eagle?

I understand that our state is struggling in this economy and, why I am saddened that our governor has decided to cut $36 million from K-12 education, I am appalled at the comments made by Jason Watkins, Republican Representative from the 105th District. When asked about the cuts to education, Rep. Watkins said “he hoped the cuts would go further,” and that when he and the rest of the Republican controlled House return in January, more cuts will be coming.

Rep. Watkins was elected on the promise to ensuring “Quality Education for Your Children and Grandchildren”.

Of all the services for a state to cut, education should be the last. Our children are our future. To use a quote from Democratic state house candidate Brandon Whipple, “A well-educated population will attract new businesses and provides more jobs for all Kansans. Slashing school funds hurts our kids and our state’s economy.”

We need to tell Rep. Watkins and his Republican friends to stop their attack on public education. And, we need to make sure that politicians like Watkins are voted out of office next election. Support your Democratic candidates. With your support, we can ensure that the future of Kansas will be full of opportunity.
