Stop the Stupak/ Pitts Amendment

We must act now to stop the Stupak/Pitts Amendment.

This amendment goes further than any previous federal law to restrict access to abortion – and it’s up to us to ensure it is removed before the legislation is enacted into law. It would prohibit millions of women from getting coverage for abortion in their health insurance plans, even if they pay for it themselves! We know the health care bill would make significant progress for women – ending gender inequalities in health care costs, halting discriminatory practices such as treating domestic violence as a “pre-existing condition,” and making coverage more affordable for American families. That’s why it’s so crucial this bill not include a provision that would set women back.

If we stand with the pro-choice Democratic women who are fighting against the Stupak/Pitts amendment, we will be the firewall against any new restrictions on a woman’s right to choose. We must act now and tell Congress the Stupak/Pitts Amendment will cause women to lose coverage and should not be included in the final health care bill. Add your name below to join with us and send a clear message to Congress: We will not stand for health care reform that makes women less healthy and less safe.

Members of the 111th Congress,

I strongly urge you to protect the reproductive rights of women and ensure that the final health care bill does not place new restrictions on women’s ability to have abortion coverage in their health insurance plans. The Stupak/Pitts Amendment that passed in the House goes further than any previous federal law that restricts access to abortion. The health care bill would make significant progress for women – ending gender inequalities in health care costs, halting discriminatory practices such as treating domestic violence as a “pre-existing condition,” and making coverage more affordable for American families – but it’s crucial this legislation does not include a provision that would set women back. I ask you to ensure that the final bill does not include the Stupak/Pitts Amendment language or any other measure that would make women less healthy, less safe and less able to exercise their constitutional rights.

Signed,
