FiveThirtyEight did a great study recently naming the democratic Congress critters most valuable to the party. They calculated member’s ratings based on votes this year on social and economic issues and generated a bunch of fancy numbers in the process.
Our retiring Dennis Moore was ranked ninth.
This study shows that even without being a Kennedy or Boxer you can be incredibly valuable to your party. Although D.Mo would never have taken a leading edge on many of these issues, the firm support and votes that these rank-and-file party members give are necessary for the functioning of our two-party system. That they are able to do this in districts that do not always lean the most liberal shows excellent leadership, messaging, and campaigning.
This reminds us what we’re going to lose in Dennis’s retirement. Whoever is going to replace Dennis has big shoes to fill – but I’m confident we’ll find a candidate who can.
