Just when many Democrats were upset if not heartbroken about the news of Sen Laura Kelly dropping out fo the KS 02 Congressional seat there seems to be a glimmer of hope.
Today I got an interesting message from a woman named Cheryl Hudspeth. Cheryl and I have only talked online in the past but this message changed all of that. I immediately called Cheryl. Cheryl and I had a nice discussion on Kansas politics and I found Cheryl to be a very charming woman who has an interest in moving Kansas forward and the passion to do so.
But who is Cheryl Hudspeth and why am I writing about her today?
Cheryl lives in the city of Girard, KS and has lived in Kansas for about 12 years now. She is married with two children, she has a background in rural development and banking. Cheryl is also now running for the KS 02 Congressional seat.
“I’m running because I think the second district of Kansas is sorely needing a Representative in Congress right now and at this point Lynn Jenkins isn’t representing anybody except the Republican National Party. That’s not what we elected her to do. There are a lot of serious issues going on and people want them addressed in a serious manner, and that’s what I can to do for them.”
Cheryl and I talked about why she wants to represent Kansas and why she decided to run.
“I’m interested in representing the constituents of this district. Lynn Jenkins isn’t doing that. Someone needs to step up to the plate and I think I have the skills, background and the knowledge to do that. I’m willing to work for the position, I’m willing to get out there and show people who I am. I have the know how and the drive to work through these issues at hand. I don’t have all the answers to all the problems, no one does, but we have to work together and bring people together to talk about these issues. There has to be constructive forums for people, not these “listening tours” where people are just screaming and telling other how it is.”
Then we talked about the issues.
“I am solidly in favor of Healthcare Reform. I have spent a huge amount of time researching and trying to understand it all. Will it be like the bill the Senate just passed or the bill that House just passed? I don’t know. I would have like to seen more be done but I think the big piece of the Health Insurance Reform Legislation will be resolved before the election of this seat.
I think the more important issues that will be coming up are the economy, jobs and the war. The war status that we have going right now is sucking the money out of our pockets. There was a great segment on the news the other night questioning whether or not this war is viable. We have to be smarter in our strategy, we cannot fight terrorism in a ground war in one country. We have to work to get out of this horrific deficit we are in. War is a huge deficit issue, that’s where the money is going.”
Cheryl also express a deep passion for protecting our environment and exploring areas of alternative energy.
“Somethings got to give. Selling all this stuff makes great money, but we need to sell more efficient types of cars, energy sources, etc. We need to move to affordable energy production. Do we get there tomorrow? No, but we have to carefully map things out. We can’t ignore the elephant in the room.”
Cheryl invites anyone who would like to work on the campaign, people who believe we need better representation in Congress and people who believe that Kansas deserves better than what Lynn Jenkins has provide to join her on the campaign trail and help elect someone who will represent you in Congress.
