Today the Coalition to Pass Health Care Reform and Stop Stupak are gathering on Capitol Hill. Several Kansans have traveled to DC to be part of the lobby day to protect women’s health in the Senate. As they lobby on the Hill, you can lobby from your chair!
- Sign the petition that is being given to legislators.
- Call Roberts at (202) 224-4774 and Brownback at (202) 224-6521. Speak with a staffer or leave a message that says “My name is XXX and I’m a constituent. I couldn’t make it to DC today with my fellow Kansans, but I need to tell Senator XXX to oppose all attacks on women’s health – pass health care reform with the Mikulski amendment and Stop the Stupak Ban!”
The most important pieces that is being debated and lobbied on right now are the Stupak-style amendment against women’s health, and an amendment by Sen. Mikulski (D-MD) that would guarantee women healthcare they need.
The Mikulski amendment will be voted on this afternoon and needs to meet the 60-vote threshold. This amendment would require all health insurance companies to provide comprehensive, preventative screenings to all women. The screenings must meet the guidelines of the Health Resources and Services Administration, and have no cost sharing requirements. In a time when all people, but especially women, are skipping health care due to costs, this is an extremely important amendment!
The Senate version of the Stupak amendment will be co-sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Sen. David Hatch (D-NE). This will, like the House version, ban abortion coverage in the health care exchange and effectively put the health of thousands of women a year at risk.
These votes are absolutely critical for the future of women’s health in this country. Soon, Planned Parenthood of Kansas + Mid-MO will also be launching a “Don’t Throw Women Under the Bus!” event that we’ll get you details on asap.
