A Candidate I Can Support

in General, Kansas Democratic Party

Much was made of the Wiggans fiasco recently.  There was good reason behind it – we can’t win as Democrats, and uphold Democratic principles with those who have been imported and aren’t necessarily very strong D’s.  Much stir has also been created lately in the search for candidates to fill the Democratic ticket for November.   Monday afternoon I had the chance to meet with Cheryl Hudspeth, who is running in the second district – and I have to tell you, this is a candidate I can support.

As Colin wrote earlier, Cheryl declared her candidacy on December 31.  Unlike the backgrounds of many of our candidates, Cheryl lives in a modest home in a small rural town just north of Pittsburg.   Her passion for politics comes from her experience, and she honestly believes she can change the district – and the country – for the better.  While many politicans have orated on the necessity of building Kansas from the ground up – Cheryl has been out in the field doing it.  While politicians have blamed left and right for the issue of poveryt in Kansas – Cheryl received an award for her innovative program.  Seeing the poorest of our society and helping them, many could argue that she probably has done more for our state than some elected officials.

Is she a viable candidate?  This is harder to judge.  In terms of fiance – no, she doesn’t have a snazzy website (yet), but she does have Facebook and Twitter.  Social media is not meant to be the backbone of a campaign, however, but rather a word-of-mouth network will be what supports this type of candidate.   We can help though – send her an email, add yourself to her supporters list, give her a donation.  Most importantly, tell Larry Gates and the Kansas Democratic Party that a different type of candidate – a  true progressive and Democrat – can win in Kansas, and we have to be helping.  Rural areas are often overlooked in our organizing campaign – indeed, in many campaigns – and hopefully Cheryl Hudspeth will be the one to harness the power!
